Course Description and Details:
This course will provide an overview of common treatments for oncology patients and the oral implications associated with these treatments. We will discuss recent research of oncology nurses and breast cancer patients’ experience with a dental referral. We will also evaluate how to improve the standard of care for these patients and potential products to aid in their oral care during treatment.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the attendee will:
• identify common oral manifestations of various cancer treatments, the incidence, and potential severity.
• Discuss the current process oncology nurses are taking when making a dental referral.
• Identify populations who are at an increased risk of developing oral manifestations from anti-cancer treatments and who may experience barriers to oral care.
• Identify possible solutions to improve the oral health literacy for oncology patients' oral healthcare providers.
• Define siloed systems of care and discuss how reducing these and improving interprofessional collaboration can positively impact the oral health outcomes of this population.
About our presenter:
Kim has been a practicing dental hygienist in Oregon for 15 years. She hold a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene and a master’s degree in allied health. Her research focus is oncology patient’s oral care and improving interprofessional collaboration between oncology and dental professionals.
