Course Description:

Medical emergencies can and do occur in dental practices every day.  Over the next fifteen years the segment of the population at highest risk for medical emergencies, those 65 and older, will become a larger percentage of our patients. The entire dental team must be prepared to recognize and respond to a variety of medical emergencies that could be precipitated by the stress of the dental environment.  This course will discuss the diagnosis, prevention, and management of common medical emergencies that might occur in dental offices.  This course is appropriate for the entire dental team and meets the medical emergency education requirement of the Oregon Board of Dentistry for license renewal.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify those at increased risk for specific medical emergencies.
  2. Participants will be able to diagnose the common medical emergencies based on the signs and symptoms demonstrated by a patient.
  3. Participants will develop a rational approach to the management of medical emergencies in general as well as the specific protocols for managing each medical emergency discussed.
  4. Participants will be able to identify modifiable risk factors for medical emergencies and understand methods to prevent their occurrence in the dental environment.
  5. Medical Emergencies in relation to administration of nitrous oxide sedation will be reviewed.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Beadnell was raised in Oregon and received his undergraduate degree from Oregon State University. In 1980, he achieved his Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree from Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry. Following his dental education, Dr. Beadnell served for 4 years as a practicing general dentist in the United States Air Force. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1988 at David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force base in California. Dr. Beadnell served three years on staff in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department while in the United States Air Force at Scott AFB, Illinois, a regional medical center that gave him a wide range of experience in all aspects of oral surgery. After serving 11 years in the USAF, Dr. Beadnell began his private oral surgery practice in Portland, Oregon, in 1991. Dr. Beadnell actively pursues continuing education courses and has lectured extensively to various dental groups throughout the Pacific Northwest. He is an active member in several local and state dental and oral and maxillofacial surgery organizations. He is a past president of the Oregon Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Western Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the OHSU School of Dentistry Alumni Association.

About the Presenter:

Ilya Babiy, RDH, MS, EPP is a dental hygiene instructor at Mt. Hood Community College. He also serves seniors and those with special needs with his portable business, On-Site Oral Health Care, and co-founded Good News Dental, an Expanded Practice Dental Hygienist brick-and-mortar cooperative clinic in Rockwood. He earned his A.A.S. in Dental Hygiene at MHCC, B.S. in Dental Hygiene at OIT, and M.S. in Education from PSU. Ilya enjoys inspiring students to fulfill their dreams and make a difference in our world. Together with his wife and three children, he loves to travel, entertain family and friends, and explore the great outdoors.

 

Complications of Local Anesthesia (2 CE's)

Course Description:

Effective pain management is essential to comfortable patient care—but what happens when local anesthesia does not work as expected? Managing patient comfort while staying on schedule can be challenging and frustrating for both patients and providers. This course will explore the common causes of local anesthetic failure and equip you with practical strategies to address them. We will examine clinician-related factors, patient-related psychological and physiological barriers, and physical or chemical influences that may interfere with anesthesia. Additionally, we will review alternative injection techniques to help improve anesthetic outcomes. By the end of this course, you will be better prepared to make confident, informed decisions when managing local anesthetic complications in clinical practice.

  2. Apply strategies for overcoming inadequate local anesthesia during patient care.

About the Presenter:
Stacie graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene in 2011 and a Master of Science in Allied Health in 2023. She practiced clinical hygiene from 2011 until 2022, at which point she transitioned into academia. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Dental Hygiene Department at Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, where she serves as the junior clinical lead instructor. She also teaches pain management, head and neck anatomy, histology and embryology, pharmacology, and various clinical lab sessions.

Forensic Odontology is the management, examination, evaluation and presentation of dental evidence in criminal or civil proceedings, in the interest of justice. As dental professionals, we are responsible for documenting and maintaining accurate patient dental records. These dental records could be utilized in the identification of victims of accidents, crimes, and mass fatality disasters. This evidence-based seminar will feature the identification methods used to identify victims of accidents, crimes, and mass fatality disasters. About Our Presenter:
Danette Ocegueda, MSDHE, RDH, FADHA is the Manager of Professional Education for Philips Oral Healthcare- Western Region. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from Old Dominion University, her Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education for the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Danette is a national speaker with over thirty-four years of experience in clinical practice, academia, research, and Forensic Dentistry. Danette is a member of the California Dental Hygienists’ Association, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, and the American Dental Education Association. She is a past recipient of the ADHA/Sigma Phi Alpha Graduate Journalism Award and the Dentsply Sirona Graduate Student Clinician’s Research Award as well as a contributor to Darby and Walsh’s Dental Hygiene: Theory and Practice 5th and 6th edition textbook.

Lisa J. Rowley has been a dental hygienist for over 45 years and has dedicated her career to dental hygiene education and advocating for the dental hygiene profession. Lisa was the founding director of the B.S. degree dental hygiene program at Pacific University, a program that focuses on access to care for underserved patients and provides students with extensive off-campus fieldwork experiences working with diverse patients in a variety of community settings. Lisa currently serves as Advocacy Director and Membership Director for the Oregon Dental Hygienists’ Association. Lisa believes that all dental hygienists should thoroughly understand the regulatory process and develop skills to successfully advocate for policy change. Nitrous Oxide Sedation in the Dental Practice (2 CE's)

This course is designed to review the use of nitrous oxide sedation in the dental practice.  Safe use of nitrous oxide requires a clinician to understand the pharmacology and mechanism of action of nitrous oxide along with patient selection, scope of practice, and equipment types.  Demonstrations on the use of both digital and manual nitrous oxide units will be shown using proper titration techniques for each.

About Our Presenter:
I have been a registered dental hygienist for 47 years. My full-time clinical experience accounted for 39 years in practice in Oregon, California, and Munich Germany. I was also coordinator for a mobile dental van project in Modesto California for 5 years, taking dental services to areas with limited access to care. My clinical workplace settings were in general and periodontal practices.

I have been on the OIT faculty since 2016 in Klamath Falls Oregon. My teaching responsibilities include senior clinical lead instructor, emergency procedures, Emerging Oral Health Topics, Vulnerable Populations, Pain management lab, clinical instructor for sophomore, junior, and senior students, and instructor for the International Externship Program (IEP) that takes students to a global site to deliver dental hygiene services to underserved populations in non-traditional settings. I enjoy teaching to share my experiences, provide knowledge, and continually find ways to help students learn and succeed.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and brings five years of clinical experience in dental hygiene practice, with a strong emphasis on patient care and evidence-based treatment.

Since January 2025, Emily McCadden has served as an instructor in clinical dental hygiene, restorative dentistry, and introductory laser dentistry. She has extensive hands-on experience with diode laser technology and has incorporated its use consistently in clinical settings throughout her career.
