Caries Management is in the Hands of Empowered Hygienists: the History & Future of Oregon | Friday, November 12, 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Presented by: Jeremy Horst, DDS, PhD

Oregon Dental Hygienists have been using medicines to control tooth decay without a drill in dental clinics, schools, and preschools, since at least 2015. With the World Health Organization’s recent addition of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) to the List of Essential Medicines, the medical management of caries has become the international standard. This approach was pioneered in Oregon, and is well accepted across all socioeconomic and geographic groups.

New materials have come into use, including non-staining brush-on treatments for initial caries lesions. The next generation of therapies includes common antimicrobials and designer drugs that rebuild the enamel, in the hands of Dental Hygienists, or even patients themselves.

The final frontier is to fix the food problem to empower communities to thrive without the plague of caries and other nutritional diseases like diabetes, fatty liver disease (cirrhosis), obesity, and heart disease. No one is better suited than Dental Hygienists and Therapists to bring patients to the next level of oral and overall health.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the indications, benefits, and risks for SDF, ITR/ART, and SMART to dental teams and patients.
  • Describe how Povidone Iodine and Curodont work against caries to dental teams and patients.
  • List 2 nutrients besides sugar that influence dental caries.

Meet your Speaker:

Jeremy Horst Keeper DDS, PhD is the director of clinical innovation at CareQuest Innovation Partners, an organization whose mission is to improve oral health for all by advancing innovation accelerate oral health access and improve outcomes for underserved populations across the U.S. As a practicing pediatric dentist, biochemist, and educator, Jeremy is known for investigating the strengths and limitations of Silver Fluoride therapy, helping to develop SMART fillings, and accelerating the adoption of maximally effective, minimally invasive caries management techniques. Keynote Speaker: Cultural Humility - Portal to Inclusion | Saturday, November 13, 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm
Presented by: Gwen Essex, RDH, RDHAP, MS, EdD

Cultural humility takes “competence” to the next level.  Applied to patient care, this paradigm acknowledges the shared expertise of the health care provider and the individual seeking care as equally important in achieving positive outcomes of care.  While clinicians are the experts regarding dentistry, our expertise is wasted if applied without consideration of the context within which the patient lives. This course will introduce the tenets of cultural humility and invite participants to engage them in a case example involving a non-conforming gender patient.

Learning Objectives:

  • Outline the three tenets of cultural humility.
  • Describe two ways to engage inclusivity in practice.
  • Identify two ways that inclusive practices benefit patient care.
