Introduction to Pediatric Dentistry for the Dental Hygienist

Speaker:  Elise Burrus, DDS

Bio Elise Burrus, DDS was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. She graduated from Boston College in 2005, with a degree in Biology. She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Marquette University School of Dentistry in 2009, graduating with honors. Dr. Elise then completed a two-year residency at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and received her Pediatric Dentistry certificate in 2011. Dr. Elise is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. She enjoys outdoor activities including running, biking, fishing, and skiing. She practices with her husband David at Pediatric Dental Associates in Bend and Redmond, Oregon.  They have a two year old son, Ivan.

Time: Sign In & Networking from 5:30 – 6:00 pm. Course will start promptly at 6:00 until 8:00 pm (light snack included)

Course Description:  Course topics will include an overview of the pediatric dental office, differences in pediatric vs. general dentist office, the role of the hygienist in the pediatric dental office, oral hygiene instruction for children, infant oral care, toothbrushing “tips”, communication and interaction with children, fluoride recommendations, when to refer a child from a general practice to a pediatric office, local anesthesia for children, and silver diamine fluoride uses and instruction.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To familiarize the dental hygienist with the pediatric dental office and working with children. 
  2. To learn the role the hygienist can play in creating a positive experience and dental home for the child.
  3. To review the latest techniques and tips in the pediatric dentistry world.
  4. To learn about silver diamine fluoride, how and when to apply it, and its benefits in caries control.
